Pass Plus Course (1-day)
'You can even take our Pass Plus Course if you learnt to drive with a different instructor!'
The Drivex Academy Pass Plus Course follows the recommended Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Pass Plus syllabus and usually lasts for one day. Subjects covered are:
- Introduction and Town Driving
- Motorway Driving
- Dual-Carriegeway Driving
- Driving on Rural Roads
- Driving in poor weather
- Driving at night
Because of the limited scope of Island roads the courses takes place on the mainland and will include driving on and off the car ferries.
The course is open to any driver who wishes to gain valuable experience driving on the mainland and can be conducted in one of our vehicles or in your own vehicle. You can even take our Pass Plus Course if you learnt to drive with a different instructor!
To gain official D.V.S.A. recognition of your pass Plus Course and hence qualify for potential car insurance discounts you must take your Pass Plus Course within one year of passing your driving test.
Course Fees
DSA Pass Plus Course (1-day): £275.00
Course fee includes use of instructor's vehicle including fuel and insurance, return car ferry travel to the mainland and all course documentation. A reduction of £25.00 will be made if the course is conducted in the candidate's own vehicle.
Please note that for logistical and seasonal reasons the night-time element of the course may have to be conducted on a different day to the main part of the course. In this event there will be no increase to the course fee.

Trailer Towing Licence Course (Category B+E)
'This course is a must for anyone who wishes to tow heavy trailers that fall outside the category B limitations'.
The Drivex Academy Trailer Towing Licence Course is aimed at giving candidates the opportunity to take the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency B+E Practical Car and Trailer Test. This course is a must for anyone who wishes to tow heavy trailers that fall outside the category B limitations.
Towing trailers on a category B licence is permitted provided that the following conditions are met:
i. If the towing vehicle has a MAM of 3500kgs then a trailer of up to 750kgs MAM is permitted
OR
ii. If the towing vehicle has a MAM of less than 3500kgs then a trailer can be towed provided that:
a) the towing vehicle MAM and the trailer MAM combined do not exceed 3500kgs
AND
b) the trailer MAM does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle.
It should be noted that condition b) above will be removed for anyone passing a car test after January 19th 2013.
To tow trailers outside of these limitations licence category B+E is required.
Subjects covered on our B+E towing course are:
- Trailer reversing skills
- Trailer coupling and uncoupling skills
- Emergency braking
- Trailer defect inspections
- On-road trailer towing skills
The B+E practical Test usually lasts for about an hour and a quarter and on the Isle of Wight is taken at the LGV Test Centre at Rookley. This is a part-time test centre and is usually only open two days per month, so we recommend contacting us at the earliest opportunity to reserve your test slot!
The course normally starts with a three-hour assessment session which is used to establish any existing trailer skills the candidate might have with respect to the required syllabus of the B+E Practical Test.
The remainder of the course can then be arranged to coincide with the candidate's B+E test date and can be tailored to suit each candidate's skill levels as determined by their assessment session.

B+E Training Session, 3-hour: £149.00

Skid Control Course
'You might know the theory behind keeping control of a car in slippery conditions but could you put it into practice?'
It is an unfortunate fact that young, inexperienced drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries and these are predominantly as a result of the driver losing control of their vehicle and hitting other vehicles and / or leaving the road.
The Drivex Academy Skid Control Course allows candidates to experience how it feels to lose control of a car in slippery conditions and how to subsequently regain control. Candidates will thus have that valuable extra knowledge and skill should they find themselves in a similar situation for real, hopefully keeping them and their passengers safe.
The course takes place at the Skid Pan facility within the historic Goodwood Racing Circuit near Chichester, West Sussex.
The course is normally for two or three candidates and includes all travel to and from the Isle of Wight. After the pre-course briefing each candidate will gain tuition and extended practice in the following:
- Front-wheel skids
- Rear-wheel skids
- Cadence braking

7.5 tonne LGV Licence Course (Category C1)
'This course is a must for anyone who wishes to drive medium-size goods vehicles that fall outside the category B limitations'.
The Drivex Academy 7.5 tonne LGV Licence Course is aimed at giving candidates the opportunity to take the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency C1 Theory and Practical Tests. This course is a must for anyone who wishes to drive medium-size goods vehicles that fall outside the category B limitations.
Before embarking on our C1 Course there are a number of conditions that prospective candidates must meet:
- Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
- Candidates must have a Provisional LGV Driving Licence. (We can provide the necessary application forms if required).
To obtain a LGV Category C1 Licence candidates will have to pass the following tests:
- Module 1 LGV Theory Test (this test consistes of two seperate tests; a multple-choice theory test and a hazard perception test. These tests can be taken together or seperately).
- Module 3 LGV Practical Test
Candidates who require a C1 LGV Licence for vocational purposes will also have to pass the Initial Qualification CPC tests:
- Module 2 LGV Case-Studies Theory Test
- Module 4 Practical CPC Test
Also, the Theory and Practical tests have to be taken in sequence:
- Candidates must pass the Module 1 LGV Theory Test before they can take the Module 3 LGV Practical Test.
- Candidates must pass the Module 2 LGV Case Studies Test before they can take the Module 4 LGV Practical CPC Test.
The C1 Module 3 Practical Test usually lasts for about an hour and a quarter and on the Isle of Wight is taken at the LGV Test Centre at Rookley. The practical elements of the course normally starts with a three-hour assessment session which is used to establish the candidate's existing driving skills in driving a larger vehicle with respect to the required syllabus of the C1 Practical Test.

Introduction to driving in France
This exciting course is ideal for those who are contemplating their first driving trip to France and would like to gain some practical experience beforehand.
There is no doubt that driving on the continent can be a very enjoyable experience with uncluttered roads and a real sense of adventure. However, the thought of driving on the wrong side of the road and dealing with unfamiliar signs and junctions can be a daunting prospect for some. So why not take one of our Introduction to driving in France courses to give you a confidence-boosting head start to your continental adventures!
The courses are for one or two candidates and include a full day driving in France. The courses can be extended if required. Originally designed for residents of the Isle of Wight, these courses can be provided for anyone in the South of England.
Course Syllabus
The course aims to cover the following general syllabus:
- Driver and vehicle documentation
- French 'rules of the road'
- Vehicle preparation
- Boarding and disembarking cross-channel ferries
- Initial drive on French roads
- Extended practice on French roads of all types
- Driving at night
- Dealing with breakdowns and accidents

Once in France the course will give extended practice on all types of French roads including:
- Buying fuel
- Town driving
- Rural driving
- Motorway & dual-carriageway driving
- Using the toll-motorways (Peage).
Course Schedule
The precise course schedule will depend upon candidate location and seasonal cross-channel ferry timetables together with any particular cross channel routes / French routes candidates may prefer. Throughout the course you will be accomapnied by your own personal Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Fleet Registered Trainer who has many years of driving experience in Europe and beyond. A typical course schedule would be:
Day 1
- Final vehicle and documentation checks.
- Early evening crossing, Fishbourne to Portsmouth (Wightlink).
- Overnight cruise-ferry crossing, Portsmouth to Caen (Brittany Ferries)
Accomodation: Evening meal on board the cross channel ferry and your own private cabin.
Day 2
- Breakfast on board cross channel ferry.
- Disembark cross channel ferry and initial drive on French roads.
- Extended driving practice on French roads.
- Overnight cruise-ferry crossing, Caen to Portsmouth (Brittany Ferries).
Accomodation: Evening meal at port or on board the cross channel ferry and your own private cabin. Suitable lunch and convenience stops will be made throughout the day as required.
Day 3
- Breakfast on board cross channel ferry.
- Disembark cross channel ferry.
- Morning crossing, Portsmouth to Fishbourne (Wightlink).
- Final debrief.

Each of these courses is individually tailored to each client's own personal choices and therefore each course is costed accordingly. Brittany Ferries (and other cross channel operators) have a fluid pricing arrangement with added seasonal variations so that we can only calculate the cost of your course once we know your exact requirements regarding the following:
- The number of candidates.
- The dates and duration of your proposed course.
- Your chosen cross channel crossing.
- The vehicle you wish to use.
